THE HISTORY OF THE GE1935 / GE1936

GE1935 sofa, GE1936 easy chair and GE1937 coffee table were created as part of a design competition arranged by
the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1948.
Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) did not win the competition but his collection received
terrific reviews by the international press, which attracted a lot of attention to Wegner
as a furniture designer – in fact, there was that much interest that Fritz Hansen ended up manufacturing the collection,
but only for a two-year period.
In 2014 Getama re-introduced this lounge set as the Venus Series to mark the centenary of Hans J. Wegner’s birth.

Slim seat upholstery
During the two years of production it was possible to buy separate seat cushions,
something which certainly did not do justice to the collection, as the cushions would hide
the fine wood work and elegant lines of the collection.
Getama will now make up for that by introducing a slim seat upholstery with either leather or fabric.
Wegener characterized GE1935 and GE1936 as resting furniture for the simple reason
that one did neither lie nor sit in it. One rested.
Now, Getama underpins this by upholstering the seat with a thin foam layer.
