The almost floating Enigma 425 pendant lamp from was designed by Shoichi Uchiyama in 2003 for Louis Poulsen.
The Enigma luminaire spreads a glare-free, soft and comfortable light directed downwards.
The screen design ensures an even illumination of the surface. The matte surface on the top spreads the light,
while the glossy surface on the underside ensures optimal reflection.
By using several layers of circular flat acrylic with space between the different layers,
this pendant lamp gets a light, floaty look.
Thin layers of acrylic in combination with thin steel wire make this pendant lamp almost invisible.
The difference in the dimensions of the flat circles, from large to small, creates a playful and dynamic look.
Due to the design of the circular caps and the use of matt and glossy surfaces,
a downwardly balanced and soft light is created.
Thanks to the neutral colors black and white, this lamp can be easily integrated into different spaces
such as the living room, the kitchen or an office space.
Dimensions |
W: 42.2 x H: 74 x L 42.2 cm and weighs 1.1 kg.
The pendant lamp works with a light source of 1x20W, GU10 and has a 3 meter long cable.
The lamp holder is made of brushed aluminum with a clear lacquered or
black wet-painted finish and the circular lampshades are made of white or black acrylic. Cable in stainless steel.
The Enigma 425 by Shoichi Uchiyama
Enigma 425 was designed by Japanese designer Shoichi Uchiyama in 2003.
Uchiyama presented a design idea to Louis Poulsen that uses the traditional chandelier concept
deconstructed in thin layers of concentric circles. This concerned floating circles that
were held by ultra-thin threads, which gave a transparent and light expression.
The name Enigma stands for 'mystery', referring to the fact that the circles appear to float
when illuminated from a distance.
The idea fitted well with Louis Poulsen's product philosophy and was a new interpretation
of the multi-shade system: Japanese grace combined with Scandinavian simplicity.
In 2018, the original aluminum version will be joined by a new black edition, featuring the
decorative possibilities of the design and a serene visual and atmospheric effect
creates while shaping and channeling light.
