In 2024, Carl Hansen & Søn will celebrate the chair’s 70th anniversary with a celebratory special edition featuring a new
wool cover with a subdued colour palette.
The cover, Umber, takes its name from the earthy brown pigment umber. The fabric’s refined aesthetic is enhanced by
its handcrafted quality, creating a soft surface that brings comfort, calm and serenity to any space.

Affectionately known as the Mama Bear Chair, the CH78 Lounge Chair by Hans J. Wegner was originally introduced in 1954 as an extension
of his CH71 Chair design. An antidote to the often-heavy lounge chairs of his time, Mama Bear’s sculptural silhouette
is defined by a series of inviting curves that offer up a warm embrace.
A lesson in form and function, craftsmanship and courage, the CH78 Lounge Chair, balances soft,
supportive curves with dynamic geometric shapes. The result is a sculptural piece of functional design that is equally at home in a living room
as it is in a hotel lobby.
Frame, armrests, and legs are crafted for stability from solid FSC™-certified wood.
An optional headrest in corresponding fabric completes the design. This neckpiece is sold separately.

Legs and armrests in solid oak or walnut.
The upholstery comes in the fabric fabric Umber by Gabriel fabrics in five colours.
Umber is a sophisticated wool upholstery fabric, featuring a distinctive small-squared pattern in brown melange.
Lending its name from the earthy brown pigment umber, the soft brown melange is Umber’s absolute defining feature, softening the geometric design,
and creating a poetic watercolour effect.
The fabric’s soft aesthetic is enhanced by an organic, handcrafted quality, creating a fabric that brings comfort, calm and serenity to spaces
anytime and anywhere.

Hans Wegner Danish Design

The creative and innovative mind of the legendary furniture designer Hans J. Wegner conceived the CH78 Mama Bear Chair in 1954.
The iconic design is now reissued by Carl Hansen & Søn, as a tribute to the man often referred to as the master of the chair.
Among Danish furniture designers, Hans J. Wegner is considered one of the most creative, innovative and prolific.
Wegner created almost 500 chairs in his lifetime – many of them considered masterpieces.
He is probably best known for his iconic Wishbone Chair which has been in continuous production since 1950.
