Information

45 Chair | House of Finn Juhl

In the fall of 1945, Finn Juhl presented the 45 Chair at the annual Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition. Nowadays the chair is common
considered one of the most revolutionary and iconic pieces in Danish furniture design.
Finn Juhl dreamed of studying art history and his in-depth knowledge of international contemporary art is evident in the
bold and uniquely shaped 45 Chair.
The space between the frame and the seat creates a lightness, which in combination with its organic shape and sublime detailing provides a
unique beauty and floating elegance. The chair appeals to all the senses and is a feast for the eyes and body. In addition, the 45 Chair is called
by the Japanese professor and design collector Mr. Noritsugu Oda: "the mother of all modern chairs".

The groundbreaking 45 Chair became the prelude to the unfolding of Finn Juhl's signature design style that we know from the second half of
the forties. In this period his designs are characterized precisely by the release of the seat and backrest, which are carried as one whole by the frame.
This approach became a defining moment in establishing Finn Juhl's status as a pioneer in furniture design.
The 45 Chair has been received as a true masterpiece and has become an icon of Finn Juhl's furniture universe. With this chair he has managed
to create an unprecedented design at the time by separating the supporting and the carrying elements.
In reality, Finn Juhl had previously experimented with separating the upholstered parts from the wooden parts in his furniture,
but with its curved backrest and organic shape, the 45 Chair established Finn Juhl as one of the leading designers of the 20th century.

Finn Juhl furniture items can be beautifully combined with each other. For example, choose a pair of these beautiful armchairs and place them at the
Art Collector's table on an Undyed Circle Rug.

Finn Juhl Organic Danish Design

The Danish modernist Finn Juhl may have been the designer with which organic forms are most visible in his furniture design.
Like other modernist pioneers, Juhl started from scratch with no role models or hereditary limitations.
He designed by measuring and analyzing his own body and how the individual parts of the chair should support the human body.
And unlike his contemporaries, with their streamlined, scaffold-like structures, Juhl strove for a more organic,
natural shape.
The potential strength of the wood was used to the maximum, just like it occurs during the natural growth process of a tree.
As Finn Juhl translated his ideas into bold, smooth joinery where every element of the design flows seamlessly into another,
he also set very high standards for the furniture makers who had to make the design.
The result is visible in beautifully refined, sculptural and iconic work that has been supplied exclusively by House of Finn Juhl
since its restart in 2001.
